Evolution of Throwing to Bases | RBI Academy Drills

YouTube video

Want to shut down the base stealing game? Coach Tino’s here to guide you through The Evolution of Throwing to Bases (Part I & II), starting with with the foundation: seamless ball exchange

How to Correctly Exchange the Ball

Hands Before Feet

Firstly, Tino demonstrated how to correctly exchange the ball. To swap the ball properly, your hands should move before you feet. Your hands must bed ready before your feet – this will improve the accuracy of your throw.

These drill will help you internalize this:

Earmuffs

As Tino demonstrated, you got to go on your knees as if waiting for a pitch. Bring your glove to your right ear, not even a transfer yet. Just practice that movement.

Now that you

Catch and Switch

Now that you’ve got the feel for it, it’s time to move on to the next drill.

Grab a partner and have them throw you baseballs while you catch them following the movement we practiced earlier – bringing your glove to your right ear. Making the same movement and grabbing that ball with your throwing hand and get the feel for this position.

Once you’ve mastered those movements, it’s time to get on with the second progression.

Getting into Your Secondary Catching Stance

The second progression would be you getting into your secondary catching stance, receive the ball, and take small step forward with your opposite foot. Refer to the previous video where we talked about Primary and Secondary Catching Stances if you’ve missed it.

  1. Move your foot to the middle of your body so you’re line up with second base
  2. Make the movement by keeping your weight on the back then rocking forward as you would throw the ball

Note: When doing this drill, it is important to move your hand first and get the beck leg in the right position.

Remember to use your WHOLE BODY, not just your arm.
