RBI Academy Drill – Bunting

YouTube video

RBI Academy Coach Nick Kern is talking and demonstrating Bunting:

One of the biggest mistakes you make when bunting is when hitters just toss the bat out there.

The best bunters are always in an athletic position.

Step 1: To get into an athletic position for bunting start in your batting stance then open up your front foot toward the pitcher, bend your knees into a strong balanced position allowing you to go up and down in your stance.

Step 2: Where to hold the bat, Coach Nick shows to hold the bat with your bottom hand a couple of inches up from the handle and your too hand holding the middle of the bat. Your top hand should make a pinching shape with thumb over pointing finger in order to try and hide your hand behind the bat and protect it from being hit.

Step 3: When bunting, start with the bat up in line with your head and then if you have to move up or down you should move your whole body and keep your head in line with your bat. At all times you want to maintain as close to a straight line from the ball, through your bat to your eyes in order be able to see the ball into the bat.

MOST IMPORTANTLY when we hunt, the ball must go DOWN.

The runner is looking for the ball to hit the ground before they take off and if you pop a bunt up and get caught out it is no good to anyone so when we bunt, PUT THE BALL ON THE GROUND!
